Geostorm (2017) Movie Review By Darrin Gauthier

Geostorm Review

Director: Dean Devlin
Writers: Dean Devlin, Paul Guyot
Stars: Gerard Butler, Jim Sturgess, Abbie Cornish

Plot:  When the network of satellites designed to control the global climate starts to attack Earth, it’s a race against the clock for its creator to uncover the real threat before a worldwide Geostorm wipes out everything and everyone.

Running Time: 1 hour 49 Minutes

Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics 14%  Audience  37%

Why I Watched It: Why not, alright it was on sale on iTunes, only $2.99.  Also it looked like good old cheesy fun.

Random Thoughts: You might look at Geostorm and think this looks like a Roland Emmerich joint and you’d be close as the director Dean Deavlin is Emmerich’s producer on many of his films.

I want to say something that I usually not touch on and that’s the Rotten Tomatoes score or IMDB scores, I find the numbers useful but don’t swear by them but the scores here are really low it seems the critics are picking low hanging fruit, this is not an Oscar winner and for my money should be taken for what it is, a silly dumb popcorn movie, trust me I’ve sat through some dry and boring films that Rotten Tomatoes have rated three times higher, not saying the numbers are wrong but just saying this is far from a 14%movie.

What I Liked: I’ve already said it/wrote it but I’ll do it again this is a big old dumb, silly, cheesy movie and I enjoyed it for all of those reasons.  The main thing for me is this film is an easy watch, it’s run time is a tad bloated but the movie has very good pace and the film moves quicker than it’s run time.  Geostorm is kind of a throwback to all those disaster mini series we used to get, an all-star cast and maybe the end of the world.

The thing that surprised me the most is that the film is not all CGI storms the film is more talk than action and more about character and plot than the storms coming to end the world.  The film is more of a who’s the bad guy, who’s doing this and it worked for me.  I liked the fact that we dealt with characters and not spent 2 hours looking at bad CGI, sure there’s some but again adds to the charm without going over the top.

Gerard Butler takes a lot of flake for making bad movies, and he does but he’s a likable actor and not a bad one at that, he has his charm and he’s a B-Type movie star.  I much prefer him in action movies than comedies.  Abbie Cornish is also good here, he has a lot of fun with the role and actually stays away from a lot of cliches and ends up not playing a stock girlfriend character, she gets a couple of nice beats here.

What I Didn’t Like:  Yup it’s a bit long, 10 minutes less and it’s a better film.

Lazy casting, look at who’s in this film and I bet you ten bucks you can figure out who the bad guy is.  The acting is a mixed bag here, I’m not a Jim Sturgess fan and here he’s bland, not bad but not very interesting either.  Also having him and Butler be brothers and American is a hoot and a half.  Also Andy Garica sleep walks through this film, a very listless and not engaged performance.

Yes it’s dumb, I’ll give you that and the whole space station thing is pretty funny, they travel in space super fast in this film.

Final Thoughts: I didn’t mind it and I had fun for the most part, I think for me it helped how bad the word of mouth was as I though it was a nice chill and relax popcorn movie.
