Why I Watched It: I can’t blame Netflix for this one this is Amazon Prime’s fault.

Random Thoughts: First off this is rare for me but I had never heard of this title, I saw it on Prime and saw the cast and was shocked I had heard nothing about this, the director Greutert has done a couple of Saw movies and is a genre vet and it’s released by Blumhouse Tilt, after seeing it I realize why this didn’t get a bigger release.

I want to touch on something cause I feel this cast is mostly miscast and one of the reasons why is genre and horror in general is hard to do, you don’t have to be a great actor to be a great genre actor what you do have to have is a feel for the genre and comic actors have a hard time with horror cause we as an audience don’t think they’re taking it serious and at times they aren’t but other times they just don’t have the genre chops to pull it off.  This movie is a perfect example of good to very good actors just being lost in a horror movie.  That is also a reason why certain actors tend to have a big career in genre films cause they not only have the rep for them but they get what it takes to pull it off.

What I Liked: I’ll be honest this isn’t a great or even good horror film but it does have two main things going for it and one is the main twist which is a very clever and smart horror twist and it’s too bad it’s wasted on this film but I did like it and it kind of half saved the movie for me.  The other thing going for it is Joanna Cassidy who is only one of two actors that are cast correctly, now Cassidy is a vet of almost every genre and here she’s the best character cause she knows what movie she in.  Sadly she’s not in it enough.

The other actor who tries his best is Anson Mount who has done his fair share of genre work and he’s alright here but his character is very under written and honestly I don’t think I learned one thing about him, he loves his wife and he bought a vineyard, that’s all I got but he’s a presence and he’s trying.

What I Didn’t Like: This might very well be one of the worst cast horror films I have ever seen, now let me make this clear the cast isn’t bad but man most of them shouldn’t have been in this film, the worst here is Isla Fisher who is so lost I felt bad for her, she didn’t have a handle on the character at all and she does give a bad performance, she just didn’t have the right vibe for the movie she was in.  It also didn’t help that they mostly surrounded her with comic actors, Jim Parsons?  Really in a horror film?  Gillian Jacobs, before you jump at me I know she can do more than comedy but here she’s not great.  The other main problem is the script, it’s bad and very cliched.  Now I will say going in I thought we were headed for Rosemary’s Baby territory but know we’re in a ghost story kind of.  That’s another problem the story even though it had a good twist is pretty dumb once you find out the “bad guy” the plot holes are so big you have to laugh it’s way too elaborate and complicated and stupid.

I also want to point out something about this movie, so we have this big thing at the beginning the reason the couple have moved out of the city, alright we’ve seen that before but this film just gets nothing right, nothing feels real.  Isla Fisher is walking around in very short jean shorts with high heel boots, she won’t drive any more so she bikes everywhere, they live like on top of a hill, it’s vineyard don’t you know, so that makes little sense and also she’s riding a bike with heels and pregnant.  Also she takes meds cause she’s been through a lot and she starts seeing things and she doesn’t want to take bills cause she’s carrying a child, now it kind of paints meds for mental health as if you take them it’ll harm the baby or they make you a zombie, now that’s an over simplification and something we could talk about but it turns to be just a plot point and a cheap one at that.

Final Thoughts: Kind of a mess, a decent idea in there but this is truly a case where a movie gets just about everything wrong.  Oh and it’s a horror film that’s not scary and just take a look at that running time eight minutes under 90, that also tells you something.
