I feel like this film would definitely divide opinion. Superficially, it’s got immature humour in spades, which has the potential to put a lot of people off, but if you give it a chance then it develops into an interesting story.
An enthralling, mismatched buddy, action comedy from Shane Black. The Nice Guys is set in the seedy, underbelly of 1977, Los Angeles and follows the bungling antics of Holland March (Ryan Gosling) and the slightly more competent Jackson ‘Jack’ Healy, as they attempt to solve the mystery of a pornstar’s death and also track down the elusive Amelia Kuttner (Margaret Qualley), a nutty activist whose disappearance may provide some answers.
Our journey starts with Ricky Baker (Julian Dennison), abandoned by his mother, he’s a dreamer and a delinquent who’s been moved by his Welfare Officer to a remote farm in the country to live with his new foster parents Bella and Hec.
It’s no mean feat, but it doesn’t exactly pay off. Scarface is oft-quoted throughout War Dogs and, with a darker tone, this film could have potentially tapped into that claustrophobic and paranoid feel. Still, it’s a very enjoyable movie with a killer soundtrack and memorable performances.
