“The Nun 2 has matched the original movie’s opening after two weekends and is still performing impressively at the box office. This installment is part of the Conjuring Universe, drawing inspiration from the actual case files of paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. In this direct sequel to 2018’s ‘The Nun,’ Sister Irene (played by Taissa Farmiga) confronts the sinister nun Valak (portrayed by Bonnie Aarons), who haunts a French boarding school.
Variety reports that The Nun 2 is maintaining its momentum in its second weekend, projecting a cumulative gross of $55 million, surpassing the original’s $53.8 million opening. It’s even in contention for the top spot against the new film ‘A Haunting in Venice.’
While The Nun sequel lags behind its predecessor, it’s still delivering strong performance. The weekend’s domestic earnings will push its global total past the $100 million mark, a notable achievement. In 2023, only six horror or horror-adjacent films have reached this milestone: ‘Haunted Mansion,’ ‘Evil Dead Rise,’ ‘Scream VI,’ ‘M3GAN,’ ‘Meg 2: The Trench,’ and ‘Insidious: The Red Door.’
Taking international markets into account, The Nun 2 might surpass the lowest-grossing film in the Conjuring Universe, ‘The Curse of La Llorona,’ which earned $123 million worldwide in 2019. Nevertheless, it still has some ground to cover to surpass ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ ($200.2 million) and ‘Annabelle Comes Home’ ($230.7 million).
The Nun 2 has the potential to secure a position above these titles, solidifying its standing in the middle of the franchise’s box office rankings. To outperform ‘Annabelle,’ which grossed $257 million worldwide in 2014, it must sustain its robust performance. ‘Annabelle’ had already earned $61.6 million by its second weekend and currently holds the fifth spot in the franchise’s highest-grossing films.”
