The Expendables 4 is facing a disappointing start at the box office. This installment, the fourth in the action franchise that began with Sylvester Stallone‘s 2010 film “The Expendables,” features a returning cast including Jason Statham, Dolph Lundgren, and Randy Couture, alongside newcomers like 50 Cent, Megan Fox, Tony Jaa, Iko Uwais, and Andy García.
According to Deadline, “The Expendables 4” was expected to earn between $15 and $17 million during its opening weekend, but it’s falling significantly short of that projection, currently estimated at around $8 million. It’s in close competition for the top spot at the domestic box office with “The Nun II,” a horror film in its third weekend, which has already grossed over $168 million.
This opening weekend performance is undeniably disappointing, and it’s worth noting that the film’s cast didn’t actively promote the movie due to a strike by the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA) for fair pay. Even with this factor, the movie’s performance is well below the typical results for strike-affected films.
To put it in perspective, the only other movie this year with a similarly low box office gross for its opening weekend was “Magic Mike’s Last Dance,” which earned $8.3 million. This film led during Super Bowl weekend, historically one of the lowest-grossing weekends of the year, and “The Expendables 4” has fallen below even that record. The next lowest performer was “Knock at the Cabin” with $14.1 million, a movie unaffected by the strike.
Adding to the challenge, “The Expendables 4” has received the lowest Rotten Tomatoes score in the franchise. While international markets might provide some relief, this action movie series’s future looks uncertain.
