“The highly-anticipated Indian film ‘Jawan,’ starring Bollywood icon Shah Rukh Khan in a dual role, is on the brink of surpassing records set by last year’s blockbuster ‘RRR.’ ‘Jawan,’ which made its worldwide debut on September 7, smashed the Bollywood opening weekend record, crossing the $100 million global box office mark. This achievement marked Shah Rukh Khan as the only Indian actor to lead two $100 million movies, following the success of ‘Pathaan’ earlier this year.
According to Collider, ‘Jawan’ is also making waves in the domestic market, having already earned over $13 million at the box office, inching closer to ‘RRR‘s’ total of $14 million. While ‘Pathaan‘ currently holds the top spot with $17 million, ‘Jawan’ could potentially challenge that record if its momentum continues.
This impressive box office performance highlights the growing recognition of Shah Rukh Khan’s work among American audiences. Although Indian films typically have a limited presence in American awards seasons, ‘RRR’ broke the mold last year by winning a Golden Globe and an Oscar, opening doors for Indian cinema. This could bode well for ‘Jawan,’ as it may also be considered for major awards in the upcoming season.
However, ‘Jawan’ faces a unique challenge due to its more straightforward action-thriller genre. ‘RRR’ benefited from its historical backdrop and anti-colonialist theme, factors that garnered attention during awards season. Historically, action movies often receive limited attention at the Oscars.
Nevertheless, nominating ‘Jawan’ could be an opportunity for U.S. awards bodies to honor Shah Rukh Khan, a global cinema icon with over three decades of contributions to the industry. Khan has already received numerous accolades at the Filmfare Awards for Hindi-language cinema, with 14 wins out of 30 nominations. Given his support for ‘RRR,’ Hollywood may be tempted to recognize his talent and elevate ‘Jawan’ to the forefront of awards nominations in the coming year.”
