Recent reports suggest that SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP are nearing the finish line in their efforts to end the ongoing actors’ strike. After a busy weekend of negotiations, the two sides are focusing on AI’s role in the entertainment industry and additional compensation for streaming shows. While details from the talks are scant due to AMPTP’s silence, SAG-AFTRA’s Fran Drescher-led statement indicates that discussions have covered various proposals, including AI.

A full week of pickets in Los Angeles and New York City has been scheduled, indicating continued pressure. Over the weekend, both parties expressed optimism but acknowledged that there are still issues to resolve. Requests for comments from SAG-AFTRA and AMPTP have gone unanswered.

Key figures in the negotiations include SAG-AFTRA Chief Negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, AMPTP President Carol Lombardini, and studio CEOs such as Disney’s Bob Iger, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav, and NBCUniversal’s Donna Langley. The main challenge remains reaching an agreement on streaming revenue for actors.

While the talks have witnessed a shift in studio attitudes, there is still work to be done. SAG-AFTRA aims to secure fair streaming revenue residuals and protect performers’ likenesses in the context of AI usage. The issue of AI became contentious with the studios’ proposal that sparked criticism from SAG-AFTRA Chief Negotiator Crabtree-Ireland.

The core of the deal will revolve around finding common ground on streaming revenue for actors. Talks resumed on October 24th after a 12-day suspension, with offers centered on increased minimum rates and bonuses tied to streaming content’s success. Studios have already faced setbacks with several movie releases postponed, including “Mission: Impossible 8,” “Disney’s Snow White,” “Elio,” and even the delayed “Deadpool 3.” Amidst concerns of an impending economic recession, the hope remains that the $6.5 billion economic loss to California due to the dual strikes can be mitigated.
