“The Marvels,” the latest superhero sequel in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, has become the lowest-grossing installment, accumulating $80 million in North America and $197 million globally over four weeks.
Despite a $220 million budget, Disney anticipates limited revenue in December and has ceased reporting weekend box office results. The film, slated to run through New Year’s, plummeted to 11th place with $2.4 million in its fourth weekend.
This disappointment is unusual for Marvel, the highest-grossing film franchise globally, earning $29.8 billion. Directed by Nia DaCosta, “The Marvels” faced burnout from the expanding MCU, contributing to its underwhelming performance. Disney’s CEO, Bob Iger, attributes the film’s struggles to pandemic-related production challenges, prompting a reevaluation of billion-dollar expectations.
While box office analysts dismiss superhero fatigue, “The Marvels” signals a shift in audience engagement with the MCU, leading Disney to reconsider its future superhero releases, with only “Deadpool 3” scheduled for 2024.
