In an interview with Vanity Fair, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige dispels rumors about the return of the original Avengers, particularly Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man, in future phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Addressing the significance of Tony Stark’s emotional final moments in Avengers: Endgame, Feige emphasises the studio’s commitment to preserving that pivotal moment achieved after years of hard work.

Despite Downey’s integral role as Iron Man, Feige recounts Marvel’s initial hesitation in casting him due to past legal troubles. He notes the studio’s reluctance to stake their future films on an actor with a controversial history. Feige, along with director Jon Favreau, advocated for Downey, leading to the unconventional decision of a screen test to convince Marvel executives of Downey’s suitability for the role.

Once cast as Iron Man, Downey became a collaborative force within the superhero ensemble, advocating for his co-stars, even negotiating higher pay for them ahead of the first Avengers film. Feige acknowledges Downey’s influential role, jokingly referring to him as the “head of the acting department” who inspired and supported his fellow actors throughout their journey in the MCU.
