Renowned filmmaker Jon Favreau is set to direct a new instalment in the “Star Wars” franchise, titled “The Mandalorian & Grogu,” which is slated to commence production later this year.
Favreau, acclaimed for creating the Disney+ series “The Mandalorian,” is known for weaving a narrative around a helmet-clad bounty hunter portrayed by Pedro Pascal. The storyline revolves around the character’s quest to safeguard a young, endearing alien named Grogu, affectionately recognized by fans as Baby Yoda. The alignment of the forthcoming film within the timeline of the live-action series, spanning three seasons and currently undergoing development for the fourth, remains undisclosed.
Expressing his enthusiasm for the project, Favreau stated, “I have relished the opportunity to narrate tales within the expansive universe crafted by George Lucas. The prospect of translating the adventures of the Mandalorian and his apprentice Grogu onto the grand cinematic canvas is undeniably thrilling.”
“The Mandalorian & Grogu” marks the initial “Star Wars” cinematic venture since the 2019 release of “Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker,” a cinematic milestone that garnered a global box office revenue of $1 billion and served as the culminating chapter of the original nine-part saga. Despite subsequent announcements by director Patty Jenkins and “Marvel” producer Kevin Feige regarding new entries in the space opera series, none materialised. In the interim, “Star Wars” has expanded its universe with the introduction of two additional live-action TV series, namely “The Book of Boba Fett” and “Ahsoka,” alongside the anticipated “Skeleton Crew.”
Collaborating on the production of “The Mandalorian & Grogu” are Jon Favreau, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and “Ahsoka” creator Dave Filoni. Concurrently, Filoni will contribute to the second season of “Ahsoka,” featuring Rosario Dawson, while providing creative insights for the upcoming film.
Lucasfilm’s forthcoming cinematic ventures include a lineup of feature-length films, with “The Mandalorian & Grogu” spearheading the roster. The slate also encompasses separate “Star Wars” projects helmed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, James Mangold, and Filoni.
Although Disney’s release calendar undergoes continual adjustments, an untitled “Star Wars” movie is currently scheduled for May 22, 2026. Additionally, a separate film set in the distant galaxy is slated for December 18, 2026, and a third “Star Wars” adventure is set to premiere on December 17, 2027. Specific details regarding these movies have not been clarified by Disney at this time.
