James Gunn has disclosed that his upcoming Superman film will simply be titled “Superman,” announcing in a post commemorating the commencement of filming, “When I completed the initial draft of the script, I named the movie Superman: Legacy. However, as I finalized the last draft, it became evident that the title would be SUPERMAN. Anticipate its release in July 2025.”

Accompanying the announcement was an image of the Superman logo from the movie, formerly known as Superman: Legacy. The snow covering the logo hints at a scene set in The Fortress of Solitude, Superman’s icy sanctuary.

Superman, famously, was the title of the groundbreaking 1978 film featuring Christopher Reeve and directed by Richard Donner. (Although it was alternatively referred to as Superman: The Movie.)

David Corenswet assumes the role of Clark Kent/Superman, while Rachel Brosnahan portrays Daily Planet journalist Lois Lane. Additionally, the cast includes Nicholas Hoult as the iconic villain Lex Luthor. Previously, the film was titled Superman: Legacy.

Warner Bros. has set a release date of July 11, 2025, marking the first standalone Superman project in over a decade since Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel, starring Henry Cavill.

The ensemble also features Skyler Gisondo (Jimmy Olsen), Sara Sampaio (Eve Teschmacher), Edi Gathegi (Mister Terrific), Terence Rosemore (Otis), Anthony Carrigan (Metamorpho), Isabela Merced (Hawkgirl), Nathan Fillion (Guy Gardner), and María Gabriela de Faría (The Engineer).

Gunn assumes both writing and directing duties for the feature. “I deeply connect with Superman because he embodies everything I represent,” Gunn shared with The Hollywood Reporter last year. “He’s an outsider who feels alienated, yet simultaneously, he’s the ultimate insider, for he is Superman. It resonates with me on a profound level.”
