Chad Stahelski, director of “John Wick,” along with his production company 87Eleven Entertainment, is set to produce an English-language remake of the Indian action film “Kill” for Lionsgate.
The announcement precedes the release of the original Hindi-language “Kill,” directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, scheduled to open on July 4. According to Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions, this weekend’s theatrical release marks a significant milestone as one of the first partnerships between a mainstream Hindi-language film and a Hollywood studio for theatrical distribution in North America and the U.K.
“‘Kill’ is one of the most vivid, wild, and creative action movies I’ve seen recently,” remarked Stahelski in a statement. “Nikhil delivers relentless action sequences that deserve a wide audience. Developing an English-language version is thrilling—we have substantial shoes to fill, and I eagerly anticipate collaborating with Nikhil, Karan, Apoorva, Guneet, and Achin to achieve that.”
The film follows army commando Amrit (played by Lakshya), who discovers his star-crossed lover Tulika (portrayed by Tanya Maniktala) is being forcibly engaged. He boards a New Delhi-bound train to thwart the arranged marriage and reunite with his beloved. However, his journey takes a perilous turn when a gang of knife-wielding thieves begins terrorizing passengers, compelling Amrit to confront them and protect those aboard.
Stahelski’s interest in developing a remake aligns with critical acclaim; as Debruge noted, “the body count is up there in ‘John Wick’ territory.”
Reflecting on the venture, producers of the original—Karan Johar, Apoorva Mehta for Dharma Productions, and Guneet Monga Kapoor and Achin Jain from Sikhya Entertainment—expressed their excitement: “When we created ‘Kill’ with Nikhil Nagesh Bhat, our aspiration was global recognition. Witnessing North American theatres embrace ‘Kill! Kill! Kill!’ is a realization of that dream. This announcement ahead of the original film’s release is unprecedented and a significant triumph for Indian cinema. We are deeply honoured.”
Jason Spitz and Alex Young will also produce the remake alongside 87Eleven Entertainment.
