The journey to bring Captain America: Brave New World to the big screen has been fraught with challenges. Initially titled New World Order, the project has faced multiple hurdles, including controversy surrounding the updated portrayal of Sabra, delays caused by the Hollywood strikes, and extensive reshoots throughout 2024.
Recent updates from insider Daniel Richtman suggest that Marvel has planned even more reshoots, reportedly due to mixed feedback from test screenings. While the exact concerns remain undisclosed, earlier reports from World of Reel noted that test audiences found the film lacking impact, describing it as “inessential” and “flat.” Criticism also extended to the action sequences, which some insiders claimed failed to meet Marvel’s typically high standards, calling them “not big or satisfying enough.”
It’s important to note that reshoots are a standard part of Marvel’s production process, as highlighted by producer Louis D’Esposito in The Story of Marvel Studios. He explained that reshoots are always anticipated:
“After the first two Iron Man movies, we knew we couldn’t get it 100% right during the shoot… We tell all the actors that there is going to be additional photography sometime in the future… We don’t know [what], but we know we are going to shoot.”
This industry norm means that additional photography doesn’t necessarily signal trouble for the film. However, further reports complicate the picture. World of Reel also speculated that director Julius Onah might have been replaced during the reshoots, amid rumors of escalating production costs and persistent delays.
Despite these challenges, Captain America: Brave New World is scheduled for release on February 14, 2025.
