Stree 2, directed by Amar Kaushik and featuring Rajkummar Rao, Shraddha Kapoor, Pankaj Tripathi, Abhishek Banerjee, and Aparshakti Khurana, serves as a strong follow-up to the 2018 hit Stree. Released in 2024, this horror-comedy revisits the eccentric town of Chanderi, skillfully combining humour and scares while subtly addressing societal themes.
The story centres on a new antagonist, Sarkata, a sinister demon who abducts women. This sets the stage for Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) and his team—Rudra (Pankaj Tripathi), Jana (Abhishek Banerjee), and Bittu (Aparshakti Khurana)—to rise once more as unlikely heroes. Shraddha Kapoor returns in her enigmatic role, providing guidance to the group as they embark on their mission. The narrative is dynamic, with a brisk pace, surprising twists, and sharp humour.
Performances are widely regarded as a highlight of the film. Rajkummar Rao showcases his exceptional comedic timing, while Abhishek Banerjee’s portrayal of Jana is particularly praised for its charm and humour. Although Shraddha Kapoor has limited screen time, her role leaves a strong impression. Pankaj Tripathi and Aparshakti Khurana also add depth with their engaging performances.
The first half of the film successfully balances comedy and horror, although some critics noted that the second half slightly loses momentum in delivering scares. While the climax has been described as satisfying, others felt it could have carried more emotional weight. Despite these critiques, the film remains highly enjoyable, bolstered by clever dialogue, a talented ensemble cast, and thoughtful social commentary.
Additionally, the movie expands the Maddock Films horror-comedy universe, incorporating callbacks and cameos likely to please long-time fans. However, certain moments of referential humour and a somewhat chaotic conclusion drew mixed reactions.
Stree 2 retains the charm of its predecessor while introducing fresh elements of comedy, horror, and thematic depth. Despite minor imperfections, it stands out as an entertaining and well-crafted sequel, particularly appealing to fans of the genre.
