T.J. Gnanavel’s “Vettaiyan” (2024) is a Tamil-language film that merges action, crime, and social commentary. At its heart is SP Athiyan (Rajinikanth), a seasoned police officer with a reputation for encounter killings. His world is shaken when a mistaken execution leads him to question his own methods. The incident, tied to the murder of a government school teacher Saranya (Dushara Vijayan), forces him into an introspective battle between duty and morality.
Rajinikanth commands the screen with a performance that balances his signature style with a deeper, more conflicted character arc. Amitabh Bachchan brings authority and moral weight as Judge Sathyadev, a staunch critic of extrajudicial justice. Their ideological clash forms the film’s core, offering a layered exploration of law and ethics. Fahadh Faasil, as ‘Battery’ Patrick, injects wit and warmth, lightening the film’s heavier moments, while Manju Warrier, playing Athiyan’s wife, delivers an understated yet supportive role. Rana Daggubati, portraying Natraj, a businessman with vested interests in the education sector, brings a menacing presence, though his character could have been further developed.
Gnanavel’s direction weaves together commercial appeal and a critical look at systemic issues, particularly the fine line between justice and vigilantism. While the film effectively raises important questions, it sometimes leans into heavy-handed messaging, slowing down the latter half. The investigative sequences keep the first act engaging, but as the film progresses, its tone shifts towards a more didactic approach.
Visually, S.R. Kathir’s cinematography enhances the film’s raw, grounded aesthetic, capturing the tension of law enforcement and the corruption it confronts. Anirudh Ravichander’s music, featuring tracks like “Manasilaayo” and “Hunter Vantaar,” enriches the narrative’s emotional beats, though some of the action sequences lack the refinement seen in recent high-budget productions.
Despite its predictable elements and moments of overemphasis, “Vettaiyan” delivers an engaging mix of action and thought-provoking themes. Rajinikanth fans will relish his signature screen presence, while audiences looking for deeper social commentary will find the film’s moral dilemmas compelling.
