“Oppenheimer,” the biographical drama directed by Christopher Nolan, continues its extraordinary box office journey, now in its 8th week in theaters. Starring Cillian Murphy as the iconic theoretical physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer, the film boasts an impressive ensemble cast featuring Emily Blunt, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, Rami Malek, and Kenneth Branagh. Since its release on July 21, it has formed one half of the box office sensation known as “Barbenheimer,” rivaling Greta Gerwig’s “Barbie.”
Collider reports that “Oppenheimer” has broken records by surpassing the $910.8 million earnings of “Bohemian Rhapsody.” This remarkable achievement now makes it the highest-grossing biographical movie in history, surpassing titles such as “American Sniper” (2014) and “The Greatest Showman” (2017).
These milestones come on top of other records set by “Oppenheimer,” including becoming the highest-grossing R-rated movie of the year and the top-grossing World War II film ever. Currently, it ranks as the third highest-grossing movie of the year worldwide, trailing only “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Barbie.”
While the film’s theatrical run continues, there’s anticipation about its streaming release, which remains unannounced. This could provide the film with the opportunity to inch closer to the $1 billion milestone. However, as time goes by, achieving this mark becomes more challenging.
“Oppenheimer” is projected to maintain weekly earnings of under $4 million at the box office. With approximately $100 million to go before reaching $1 billion, crossing that threshold before exiting theaters seems unlikely. While international markets may provide a boost, it faces stiff competition from upcoming releases like “Saw X,” “The Expendables 4,” and “The Exorcist: Believer,” which will gradually reduce its screen presence. Nonetheless, the film’s historic success remains a testament to its impact and appeal.
