How I got into movies: I’ve been obsessed with films for as long as I can remember really, certainly from the age of four or five and upwards. My earliest memory of going to the cinema is with my family when Jurassic Park came out in 1993 and I suppose a Spielberg classic isn’t the worst initiation film in that regard. My family weren’t for the whole age censorship thing, so I was thrust into the terrifying and in a way perversely enjoyable worlds of Terminator, Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, It and Robocop in my formative years. I suppose that’ll be where my appreciation for the horror and Sci-fi genres rose from. Of course, this was counter balanced with some kid friendly classics like Home Alone, the Wizard of Oz, James and the Giant Peach, Hook and the Lion King. Then at some point in the early to mid 90s I was introduced to Star Wars and so began my fanatical love affair with that particular franchise.
What I love about movies: Films are pure, blissful escapism in its finest manifestation. As a gamer and something of an avid reader, I’m keenly aware of their ability to tap into this area too. But nothing beats a good film or the excitement of going to the cinema. The experience of being transported to a place where all the worries, the stress of every day life become meaningless and are allowed to dissipate for a short while has been a staple of most people’s lives going back 100 years and I’m no different. The ability this medium of entertainment has to light the imagination, spark real debate and bring people of all backgrounds together with a common passion and also just the sheer range of emotions that it can stir within a two and a half hour timeframe is unique. It’s a beautiful thing, perhaps second only to music in its importance for me.
Favorite Films: The Star Wars OT, Terminator 1 & 2, The Shawshank Redemption, Back to the Future Part 1 & 2, The Lord of The Rings Trilogy, Dumb and Dumber, Captain America Trilogy, Dead Mans Shoes, Spider-Man 2, Dollars Trilogy.
Favourite Actors: Clint Eastwood, Paul Newman, Leonardo DiCaprio, Gary Oldman, Al Pacino, Christoph Waltz, Tom Hanks, Alan Rickman, Russel Crowe, Kurt Russell.
Why I started writing: I love writing in general, I’m passionate about the subject and enjoy expressing my opinions or views about things on a daily basis, so it’s only natural then that I should choose to combine the two and put forth my thoughts. If it maybe influences people to watch a great film they otherwise might’ve gave a miss or even enlightens others via a different perspective then all the better.
