Woman in Black 2 Review

The Woman In Black 2: Angel Of Death (2015) Movie Review by Darrin Gauthier

Director: Tom Harper
Writers: Jon Croker (screenplay), Jon Croker
Stars: Helen McCrory, Jeremy Irvine, Phoebe Fox

Plot: 40 years after the first haunting at Eel Marsh House, a group of children evacuated from WWII London arrive, awakening the house’s darkest inhabitant.
Running time: 1 hour 38 minutes
Rotten Tomatoes Score: Critics 21% Audience 28%

Why I watched it: It’s a horror film, that’s all I got this time. I hadn’t even seen all of the first one.

Thoughts: Here’s a sequel that I don’t think we needed and was shocked it was released in theatres, first one did alright and I have been meaning to watch it but it was taken off Netflix Canada, one day I’ll catch up to it.

What I liked: Sadly not too much, the house is big and spooky I’ll give them that. Having it set around the war was fine showing how Britain was at the time, making it a period piece was a decent idea. I did like Phoebe Fox, I didn’t like her character but I think she could go places, she’s very likeable and did show some range, I would have liked to see her with a better role and script.

What I didn’t like: This was a very badly shot film, man was it dark, look dark on it’s own doesn’t make a film scary and filmmakers out there remember the audience actually has to be able to see the film to enjoy it. From the ground up this wasn’t a very well made film, direction wasn’t great, the cinematography was bad, the sound wasn’t great, yeah it was a bad movie.

They throw all these kids into this film and they try to make the tension around these poor kids but we don’t know them, they have no characters, except for the main boy who didn’t speak I didn’t even know there names, I couldn’t tell one from the other. Stock kid characters in a horror movie drives me crazy, it’s lazy.

I’ll be honest this story was boring, I lost interest a half a hour in, nothing about this film stood out. No energy and no tension, they had a creepy house but the film wasn’t scary and they did nothing to build tension. The script here is the real villain this is lazy screenwriting, give everyone a tragic backstory, put a child in danger throw stock characters into it and then press play. I won’t blame the actors cause this story is not fleshed out and really it’s so dated and cliched no actor could have saved it, I would have liked to see more personalty from the kids to at least make me care about them.

Final thoughts: The worst thing a horror film can be is boring and The Woman in Black 2 is a boring and needless film.
