Boyka: Undisputed (2016) Movie Review by Darrin Gauthier

Director: Todor Chapkanov
Writers: Boaz Davidson (story), David N. White

Plot:  In the fourth installment of the fighting franchise, Boyka is shooting for the big leagues when an accidental death in the ring makes him question everything he stands for.
Running Time: 1 hour 26 minutes
IMDB Score: 7.1

Why I Watched It: This is an easy one, I’m a huge Scott Adkins fan and I’ve really liked the Undisputed films.

Thoughts: Yes this is Undisputed 4 and at one point that’s what it was called.  This has been a great B-Movie franchise, once the tone shifted after Undisputed 1 the films have been great action fight movies and has made Adkins an action star.

What I liked: This series is all about action and this one is very good, it’s not as good as the third one but this one is very entertaining and it does what all the films have done and that have great fights and film them and shoot them the way fight scenes should be shot.

When this movie focuses on the in ring fighting it’s a hell of a movie and Adkins amazes me with his kicks, the best kicker in the business right now, his double kicks and spins are amazing and this guy is now in his 40′s. Adkins as Boyka is the reason to watch the film, he doesn’t say much but he’s a fighting machine. Adkins took what was a bad guy role in Undisputed 2 and turned it into a franchise for himself.

The thing you have to give this movie is it knows what it is, sure there’s a plot but it’s all leading to the action and just making Boyka a bad ass.  This is a funny film style wise cause it looks cheap and the photography is just alright until they get in the ring and then all the style is shown and it looks great.

What I didn’t like: The plot is pretty silly, Boyka yet again tries to redeem himself and tries to say a women who’s being made to be a cocktail waitress at a ‪fight club‬ in Russia somewhere, yes you read that right.  The plot is very heavy handed and is cliched beyond belief and I didn’t care for the main bad guy as he was almost a cartoon and not menacing at all.  The film is also hurt by not having a true bad guy fighter, there’s two and one is big but that’s it, it lacks the tension and the stakes of the earlier film.

Final Thoughts: Bottom line is you’re a fan of this franchise then you need to see the film and you should at least like the fights, a chance to see Adkins again as Boyka is well worth it.  It’s not as good as the third one plot wise but it’s a fun film.
