Bad Match (2017) Movie Review By Darrin Gauthier

Bad Match Review

Director: David Chirchirillo
Writer: David Chirchirillo
Stars: Lili Simmons, Noureen DeWulf, Jack Cutmore-Scott

Plot:  An internet-dating playboy’s life spirals out of control after meeting a woman online.

Running Time: 90 mintues

IMDB Score: 5.7

Why I Watched It: Not sure, alright let’s blame Netflix, it’s a genre thriller so that’s my excuse.

Random Thoughts: First off Bad Match is kind of a bad title and since we’re dealing with a Fatal Attraction knockoff and online dating you really good have done better than Bad Match. The other thing I would like to point out about this sub-genre is that everyone thinks of Fatal Attraction but really go back to Play Misty For Me with Clint Eastwood which is another film in this vain.

What I Liked: I kind of liked the set up of a guy who really is just all about himself, he gets up plays video games go to work, gets dates online and then sleeps with them, then leaves then repeats it all over again. The film doesn’t go far enough but it does shine a bit of light on this kind of shallow lifestyle, and really hitting the point home where most of this guys life is either online or through online.

The acting is a mixed bag here but I would say I liked Lili Simmons cause she has a very tough role, she might be the bad girl, she might be a red herring, you have to be unsure of her but she gives a pretty good performance, she plays someone who’s young and finding herself and maybe a little needy.

What I Didn’t Like: It’s really tough for a movie when it’s big twist can be seen a mile away and this film once it hits the thriller part really crumbles under it’s own wait. I call this a shaggy dog story, it’s not what you think it’s about but the film tries really hard cause it wants to shock you with the twist.  The film takes it’s plot and shoves it hard in one direction but when it does that it really kills the film.  Now the lead character played by Jack Cutmore-Scott is kind of unlikable at the beginning but by the half way mark he’s a lunatic, I mean he’s arrested and his lawyer tells him we either plead guilty or get “the girl” to confess.  So our “hero” decided I’ll kidnap here and threaten to kill her is she doesn’t confess.  Really?  That’s a plan.

That’a little bit of the craziness and downright stupidity of the script, they could have done something with this and the biggest miss here is that the low life hero of this tale doesn’t seen the error of his ways, that he treats women badly nope they turn it into a psycho drama and it doesn’t work.  Don’t even get me started on the ending, I’ll just say this by the time we get to the end I was shaking my head so hard I almost got a headache, it’s dumb, I’ll leave it at that, well dumb and really lazy.

Final Thoughts: They could have done something with the premise if they wanted to stretch the material and go outside the box and make the film about the characters and their lifestyle choices but instead they went with a very cliched genre thriller that and no smarts about it and was really not thrilling.
