Darc (2018) Movie Review By Darrin Gauthier

Darc Review

Director: Julius R. Nasso
Writers: Tony Schiena (screenplay), Dennis Venter
Stars: Tony Schiena, Armand Assante, Kippei Shîna

Plot:  To bring down a global human trafficking ring, an Interpol agent recruits the help of a brutal criminal with inside knowledge of the yakuza.

Running Time: 97 Minutes

IMDB Score: 5.9

Why I Watched It: I blame Netflix a lot for me watching bad movies cause they’re my dealer but they also give me some nice surprises, Darc was something I never heard of but it came on Netflix and I got an alert, I read the plot and went alright that’s my wheelhouse and gave it a blind watch.

Random Thoughts: I’ve said it tons of times but I’m a genre junkie and the B-Movie action film is a sub-genre that doesn’t get a lot of respect it’s cheap and it’s brainless fun for the most part and I have no problem with that but it’s also nice to see new blood in front of the camera and behind and here we have Tony Schiena who not only stars but wrote the screenplay, now I’m always nervous when an actor writes for them self cause it’s often times close to them just pleasuring themselves but it’s nice to see someone try to create something new and put themselves out there.

What I Liked: Darc is a different kind of action film and consider this a warning and also something I liked, this is not a cheesy action film, this is a brutal and tough action film, real stakes and the tone is very dark(pun warning) and though I was shocked at times I will say they went with it and the tone stayed right there and it worked.

Tony Schiena is good here cause he doesn’t try to do too much, he’s blunt force he’s a big guy and I think it was smart that he was quiet and didn’t talk a lot. Schiena has made a very cool and brutal character in Darc and yes I could see sequels.

The film is also more plot heavy then you would think, this is kind of an undercover in the mob story mixed with The Punisher, we have not one but three bad guys three generations of the same family and all three are evil and all have a tie to Darc.  They’re able to not only build and create a believable action character but also a world to explore.  I also liked the use of the supporting cast and that Darc isn’t the only one who can be bad ass, I have a soft spot for Armand Assante and he gets a very cool bad ass moment as does Dawn Olivieri, I would keep an eye on her I think she could have a good career. What Oliveieri does well is she’s stuck in the girl next door character, literally, but she brings humour and again she’s not someone looking to be saved. The most important point in a movie like this is the action, not only is it good but is it filmed well and in both cases the answer is yes.  There is ton of fights and gun battles and sword fights, the film is full of action and it’s filmed well and it showcases Schiena has a fighter and it also shows this is a big guy.

What I Didn’t Like: There might be more plot than needed and it does get way more complicated than it needed to be, but again they tried but they could have tighten up the story and made it a bit more streamline. Also as I said this is a brutal film, this is not a feel good action film, it’s pretty dour and like I said there’s lot of fights and the action is brutal at times and there’s violence against women so just go in prepared for it.

Final Thoughts: A very solid film, a very good genre movie and I look forward to seeing Tony Schiena again and yes I would watch another Darc movie.
