Why I watched it: I saw the first two and the a couple of the Japanese films and of course it’s because it’s a horror film and we’re in the Halloween season so basically I had to watch it.
Random thoughts: So this was to be called Ring 3 but they changed it to Rings, not sure what that tells us, so is Rings a reboot more than a sequel? It was a big gap between The Ring 2, which by they by was a very bad and needless sequel, to this one Rings.
What I liked: At the core I think they had one good idea, what if you saw the tape but then just passing it off to other people to keep it moving and no one dies, it’s a decent idea. To make the story about keeping a story alive is different and if they took some time they might have made a solid movie about that one idea.
Acting wise I liked the Johnny Galecki character and he was good in it, Vincent D’Onofrio is good here but it’s a stock role for him but hey he plays a character with secrets and who was a priest and who’s blind so yes he chews the hell out of it.
What I didn’t like: It’s make something clear in North America The Ring isn’t a franchise, there was two movies one which was good and people liked and a money grab sequel no one liked so this film had to rekindle the success of the first film and it doesn’t do it. Rings is a sloppy and a very badly plotted movie. Honestly this goes over the same ground as the first one, we focus this time on the origins of the birth mother and make it a mystery again and frankly it’s dumb. The main acting is very bad here, the two leads are bland and have no chemistry together at all.
My main problem with this film is that there’s no originality to it and really no effort put into it to make it different. They did not have a story to tell, they cut and paste most of the first film and filled in some blanks. I cash grab after an unsuccessful cash grab of a film is a bad idea unless you really had something to add. Ever been in class and say something and you make a good point then the teacher says “hey does anyone have anything to add” and that not very nice classmate shoots up their hand and basically says what you said and they do it just to make it look like they had something to say that’s this movie they copy the first one and add nothing new.
Final thoughts: Look I didn’t except anything great cause really we didn’t need this film but I had hope they’d give us a couple of kills or images to make it worth our while, one point to end this one there is no way this film should have been 1 hour and 42 minutes, way way too long.
